Todd Sutton visited Goodwill recently to find out what thrift stores do with all of those unwanted clothes.

From a donator’s stand point, most of us heave a huge sigh of relief after a thrift store clothing drop for three solid reasons:

  1. Freedom! Goodbye sweater the color of vomit and pants that torture you with their miniscule size.

  2. Landfill Monster: The last thing the landfill beast needs is more of anything.

  3. Guilty Secret: You now have room for new stuff.

Fear not consumers-if you get your shopping fix from catalogs, here’s some interesting news from the Direct Marketing Association. According to one of the trade organization’s recent marketing pieces, shopping through a catalog saves time, money and carbon emissions!

If Americans replaced two shopping trips to the mall each year by using mail order catalogs, collectively we would:
  • Save $490 million on gas costs
  • Eliminate time spent driving 3.3 billion miles
  • Reduce carbon dioxide emissions by three billion pounds

But what about those catalogs you definitely don’t want? GreenDimes can help. They’ll actually pay you a buck and reduce your junk mail–including catalogs–by up to 90%.
