That's right: the slightly controversial, dubiously green, and incredibly popular "Cash for Clunkers" program is ending tonight. Why is it ending so soon if it's so damn popular? Because it's run out of funding. Twice, actually. The program was such a hit with consumers that it used up its $1 billion in funding in under a week. Then, Congress approved $2 billion more, expecting that to at least last through labor day. 'Twas not to be. The additional 2 bill are expected to be depleted by the end of the day.
So, while CARS (Car Allowance Rebate System) may not be super green, or an efficient way to reduce emissions (some economists figure it costs up to $500 per ton of CO2 spared), it is inarguably an opportunity to get yourself a cleaner car with a little help from the government. If you've a) got an old, polluting jalopy in your garage, and b) were planning on getting a new, more efficient car anyways, then by all means, hurry up and get that polluter off the road.
Today's your last day to get $4,500 towards a cleaner, greener car by kicking the old one off the curb. Just saying. For more information on the details and requirements for participating in the program, check out the CARS website.
