Normally when we dream of winning the lottery we think of quitting our jobs, buying a new home, traveling, paying off dept, and then saving a bit for charity. But one Canadian couple went another direction. They gave the majority of their $11 million in winnings to charity and then saved a tiny percentage, just $300,000 for a rainy day fund, according to Money Watch.

Alan and Violet Large told reporters:

“What you’ve never had, you’ll never miss.”

The couple feared the headache of dealing with the cash and even more than that have realized with age that money won't bring them happiness. Violet recently finished undergoing chemotherapy and it's made the couple of 35 years realize now more than ever, that all they need is each other.

Violet said:

“We haven’t spent one cent on ourselves because we’ve been too busy getting everything looked after and with my health, I have to wait to get my health back to get the energy to do anything. We’re not travelers anyway. We live in the country and we’re proud of it. Money can’t buy you health or happiness.”

The list of charities receiving donations from Alan and Violet is extensive and includes the Red Cross, local fire departments, churches, cemeteries, the Salvation Army, and local hospitals. It's stories like this that restore our faith in humanity.
