For futurists who are working on building tomorrow's ecotopia, i09.com has a to-do list gleaned from sci-fi author Ernest Callenbach.

Things you can do today: recycle all the waste materials you can and read Collapse by Jared Diamond (2004, Viking Adult). This month, consider refurbishing a machine you were going to dump and reuse it again, as well as volunteer with an organization to help your community produce less-polluting waste.

Here's something else ecotopian hopefuls should do this year, per Callenbach:

Be sure that you vote for political candidates who support national and international cooperation to scale back on carbon emissions and toxic mining practices. Since this is a global problem, candidates need to be thinking outside city boundaries, state boundaries, and national boundaries. This could mean signing onto the Kyoto Protocol and the Bali plan, or it could mean cooperating with the city next door to treat acid mine drainage in a local area.
