Sister site Treehugger reported on Eco-Libris in the beginning of '08. We wanted to follow-up with a well-deserved one year birthday wish to this impressive literary green team.

According to Eco-Libris, about 20 million trees are cut down annually for virgin paper used for the production of books sold in the U.S. alone.

Eco-Libris to the rescue: in its first year, the group has balanced out 50,005 books resulting in 65,586 new trees planted by partners in developing countries.

Check out how you can:

  • Offset your literary addiction: Plant a tree for every book you read: at a buck a book, it’s a great deal! ($5 minimum).

  • Green up your next gift: Send an Eco-Libris greeting card and corresponding Eco-Libris stickers to the guy or gal who has everything and impress them with your eco-savvy. It's one click easy.

  • Start an eco book club: A growing number of book clubs are balancing out the books they read – join them! Get suggestions for your green read list here.

To finalize your book offsets, check out these creative reuse tips!
