Orangutans used to thrive in many different parts of Southeast Asia, but these great apes are now a species in peril. Clear cutting, forest fires, and hunting are reducing the numbers of these creatures to alarmingly low levels even in Borneo and Sumatra, their last remaining homes. Because huge swathes of forest have been stripped apart for farmland, palm-oil plantations, and urban development, the orangutans' native habitats are disappearing, ravaged by deliberate fires that often claim the lives of orangutans trapped in the forest canopy.
It costs more than $2,000 a year to rescue, rehabilitate, and release each orangutan, but you can help by giving as little as 30 cents a day to rescue sanctuaries such as the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation, which looks after over 800 rescued orangutans.
