That's the premise behind Better World Books, a "radically different kind of bookstore" based in Northern Indiana. What makes this for-profit venture different? It donates part of your purchase to a non-profit literacy program such as Books for Africa, the National Center for Family Literacy, and Room to Read.

To date, Better World Books has raised more than $1.3 million for over 70 literacy and education non-profits, while providing over 450,000 books for Books for Africa and the National Center for Family Literacy. The carbon-neutral company also prides itself in diverting over 5 million pounds of books from landfills, along with more than 560,000 pounds of metal shelving from libraries across the nation.

Plus, Better World Books helps libraries and schools sell used books through "online sidewalk sales" you can locate by zip code, so your cash goes back to your community. Shipping is free within the United States. ::Better World Books
