I know, I know, you can't believe that this house was coming down. I couldn't believe it either. But, since it was, I was determined to do it justice. This caliber of home is not typical, not by a long shot, of the normal auction. It was such a privilege to be able to redirect these phenomenal materials. It was hard core auctioning all day, without interruption. It was so much fun because for once, there was very little begging on my part, which is so rare for me!
I got a "bye on begging" and it felt so good. A gal could get used to that. Those of you who have seen other episodes will concur. It can be downright humiliating sometimes when trying to move materials at auction with a slim market. But whether it's a packed house (literally!) or a ghost town when it comes to auction day, I've got a job to do. Sell, divert, and make people delirious with incredible deals.
Some of the things I am most proud of at that auction were not caught on film. All the gorgeous oak flooring was recovered, the roof was sold, most of the leaded windows, even the stone blocks on the outside of the house. I also got to connect with some old friends, like Frank & Rick, who bought that awesome stairway light, I made some fun new ones too, like Craig & Seth, they bought the dining room and a bunch of other stuff. Being from Des Moines, they were living out of a hotel during their deconstruction so I cooked them dinner. They introduced me to Maytag blue cheese and I learned that if you get designers a little liquored up, the furniture starts flying! They left well fed, and my house has never looked better!
