Life for the volunteers in the vast backcountry of Alaska is tough. Only five people remain after the other members chose to activate their emergency GPS beacons to summon a rescue helicopter, and their chances of surviving the experiment are worsening with each passing day.
The days of constant physical labor, freezing temperatures, and lack of food has wreaked havoc on minds and bodies. The volunteers have been only minimally successful in their hunting efforts and as a result, they are not getting the proper vitamins and nutrients their bodies need to stay healthy. Their immune systems are weakening and in order to continue the journey they must secure food&mdahs;a lot of it.
As part of the experiment, master hunter Billy Fitzgerald has flown in to help the group hunt a bear. In his thirty years in Alaska, Billy has seen it all. He's a pilot, commercial fisherman, sled dog explorer, and big game hunter. If the team can take down a bear, it would provide them with enough meat to get them out of the wild.
Kimberly Wise and Carolyn Yamazaki are able to spot a black bear in the distance, and with Billy they spend hours stalking the animal. Unfortunately they are unable to get a shot off, and the bear is able to get away unscathed. However, the day is not lost: Kim is able to take down two small game birds on the way back to camp. It's not the bear, but the meat will go a long way to stave off the group's gnawing hunger.
As the group prepares for departure, mistakes are made. They misread their map and underestimate the distance they must travel to get to their next shelter. In doing so, they have given themselves a false sense of security and push their departure off until late in the afternoon. In Alaska, both the terrain and the weather are unpredictable. The group may have set themselves up for disaster.
