READ MORE ABOUT:
It is the eighth and final leg of the group's long journey. Winter has settled in for good, and the temperatures have ceased to climb above freezing. With no idea how much further they must travel to find civilization, the group is struggling to put one foot in front of the other. On the trek to their eighth shelter they find signs that civilization could be near—a trail, a hunter's bullet, and some power lines. But the group is dealt a crushing blow when they finally find out that their shelter is a crude tent consisting of nothing more than canvas thrown over a rickety wooden frame.
The psychological and physical pressure the journey has put on the group is too much for Carolyn Yamazaki. She has finally had enough as she activates her emergency GPS beacon to summon the rescue helicopter. The rest of the team looks on as another member is extracted from the experiment.
Once Carolyn is gone, the group must immediately get back to the task of surviving. They are completely out of food, so Jake heads downstream to try his hand at fishing and John heads into the forest to hunt with the small caliber rifle. The land is covered in ice and snow, and by this time most of the wildlife has disappeared, but John does manage to bring back a few small squirrels. It's the first meal the group has had in almost three days.
The group is down to four people when they finally push on. They are following a map to a ninth shelter, but only a short distance into the hike they come across a set of train tracks. They are overcome with joy with the realization that the tracks must lead to civilization. The only question is, will a train pass by soon? The group is willing to take the risk. They park themselves next to the tracks to wait it out. The gamble pays off, and a train does come by. Jumping and screaming they flag it down and hop into the baggage car. After almost thirty days battling some of the toughest terrain on the planet, the group's long, brutal journey is finally coming to an end. The only surprise left in store for the weary survivors occurs when they pull into the train station. Their families are there to welcome them Out of the Wild.
