READ MORE ABOUT:
The experiment begins as nine ordinary Americans are dropped off deep in the heart of Central Alaska. The goal is to make it back to civilization by any means necessary. With a map in hand and only the essential survival items they can carry on their backs, the group sets off in search of their first shelter. Their inexperience in the wilderness is immediately apparent as some team members begin struggling early on under the staggering weight of their packs.
After they finally arrive at their first shelter, the group of strangers begins figuring out what chores need to be accomplished. There are four basic elements to surviving in Alaska: shelter, water, fire, and food. All of are necessary, but difficult to come by. Over the course of three days, the group attempts to put to use the skills they learned in the three days of survival training they received prior to starting the experiment. The group splits up the chores that need to be done: snares are set to try to capture small game, fire is started with flint and steel, water is gathered from a nearby river, and an attempt to catch fish is made. In the end, the only food they are able to catch is a single mouse. Not nearly enough to feed the entire team.
Quickly they realize that life in Alaska is going to be hard—brutally hard. If they hope to make it out of the wild they will have to draw on every ounce of will they have. By the end of the third day, it is simply too much for one team member and Alaska takes its first casualty. Nine people started this journey, but only eight are moving on.
