Whales, the air-breathing, song-singing, land-mammal descendant, gentle giants of the ocean are as fascinating as they are beautiful. Unfortunately, these majestic animals are still threatened by a number of human-caused dangers. Naval sonar confuses whales, causing them to become stranded and beached. Global warming is reducing the population of krill, a common food source for whales. Then, there is hunting.
Despite the 1986 international moratorium on whaling, some nations continue to hunt and kill large numbers of whales each year for "research purposes." This is an outrage to many environmental and animal rights activists, but none have taken action like the members of Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and the crew of the Steve Irwin. Led by Captain Paul Watson, the crew has intervened in Japanese whaling actions, forcing them to fall below their quotas several years in a row.
