Ask the Waste Sleuth: How can I recycle plastic bags?

Did you see it? See what? Well, G Word of course! In a recent episode of G Word, I investigated how plastic bags can be recycled (Bag Me a Recycler). Many viewers who saw that episode responded by asking me how they can recycle all the plastic bags they accumulate from their shopping outings. OK, I'm not going to write a long piece on all the environmental issues about bags ? paper or plastic ? and tell you which is better. Why? Because right now you are reading this from your computer and are able to find many great articles online on this topic. What I will do is share some basic information about how you can recycle the bags you already have and give you a little nudge to use a reusable bag whenever you can.

Recycling and preventing waste just takes a little effort... Read the full story on Planet Green

Hello there! Gregory from G Word's "Ultimate Eco Cook Off" here with some thoughts on the organic and luscious OLALLIEBERRY!

Urban Foraging and How with Stephen Brooks

I am absolutely floored how much fruit is out there that never gets eaten. I find the people that have pumping fruit trees in their yards often feel bad that so much is going to waste and scramble to give it away. There are many ways to go about foraging in our cities and here are a few very important pointers.

Depending on where in the world you are, most foods are seasonal so foraging in the Northeast in the dead of winter is obviously not a great idea. While some areas of the U.S. can be foraged all year around like in Florida and most of California. I personally like to drive to an ethnic area and drive slowly up and down the streets seeking productive fruit trees. This takes putting on your fruit tree-seeking lens.
Gregory Schaefer Says: Cactus!

Gregory Schaefer from G WORD'S "Ultimate Eco Cook Off" here, reflecting on what was, quite possibly, the manliest thing I've ever cooked: CACTUS!

I was scared to death with this challenge. I've eaten cactus maybe...twice? My old mechanic in Los Angeles used to love to cook me lunch and his wife would always feed me pickled nopales. I thought they were green peppers at first but eventually realized they were strips of cactus paddles. Last year I took a day-trip to Tijuana and ate an amazing salad of seared cactus with quesa fresca and chicharrones (pork crackling). Pretty awesome stuff. But do I eat cactus regularly? No. Have I ever cooked cactus? No.

A week before the shoot I visited a local Latino supermarket and loaded up on paddles. When I got home I grilled ... Read the full story on Planet Green

Evette Says: Put the Smack Down on Junkyards--Salvage

FILTHY. That is the one word I would use to describe the junkyard we taped at today. The grease and grime were overpowering, not to mention all the fumes from the bull dozers and back hoes they use to move the junked cars from one place to the next. All I could think about was how brutal this place would be on the hottest summer day with 98% humidity. Let's just say I would probably rather be just about anywhere else.

But bless any of you who work in auto salvage. The auto industry is one of the top industries for re-using and recycling. When a car comes into a junkyard it gets stripped of all it's valuable parts - engine, transmission, exterior panels, axels - you name it and they chop it up. The parts are catalogued and stored, so when something goes wrong with your wheeled... Read the full story on Planet Green

Bear with me, folks, this one has a happy ending...

For me, nothing manifests our culture's excesses and shortsightedness better than waste-landfills. Drive past one and suddenly the all the flaws of a throwaway culture become pungently apparent. As a kid growing up in northeast New Jersey, nothing saddened me as much as the sight of stately Great Blue Herons wading in the oily murk of the once vital Meadowlands rushing by the family wagon's windows. Where once vast majorities of the Atlantic Ocean's fish and bird life had come to breed and live, now only putrid waters, rotting trash and the thick stands of resilient cattails remained. In some areas, landfill from years earlier burned day and night beneath the ... Read the full story on Planet Green
