Discovery Project Earth: Hungry Ocean

Team Planet Green

The oceans, which cover two thirds of the planet, are hungry for carbon. Microscopic plants called phytoplankton thrive on ocean nutrients and, like all plants, need to absorb carbon to survive. These organisms already absorb close to half of the world's excess carbon emissions and some scientists believe they can be used to remove even more.

Geo-engineer Brian von Herzen believes that by increasing the population on phytoplankton in the ocean, he can create large carbon-capturing blooms that will help slow, or even stop, climate change. His controversial idea relies on ocean fertilization; using pumps to bring nutrient rich waters from deep in the ocean closer to the surface where plankton thrives.

Will the innovative pump design work? Could plankton blooms be the answer to excessive carbon emissions? Find out in Discovery Project Earth: Hungry Ocean.
