Every year the school of engineering at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) hosts EurekaFest, which is a celebration of intelligent inventions designed by tomorrows leaders of technology. The student teams participating come from all over the US, and are looking at problems happening all over the world.
A group of MIT undergrads have created a shock absorber that harvests energy from a vehicle's movement and can improve fuel efficiency by as much as 10%.

Howard P. Davis and his team of WSU students (E-Team) have been in the process of developing treadle pumps for Malawi. In case you are unfamiliar with the term treadle pump, it is a foot or arm operated water pump that has the ability to irrigate small crops and land in areas with a relatively high water table.

Currently there is desperate need for economic lighting systems that can be assembled, installed, and maintained by the millions of rural poor who live in the remote regions of the developing world. We have known for years that the traditional light sources such as lamps with cotton cloth wicks are expensive to run, provide poor quality illumination, and degrade the air quality. But the question is, how can we replace these units with an eco-friendly option?

Alex Bell and Andres Pacheco are studying engineering at Swarthmore college. They've worked worked very hard on an ambitious project: "Our goal was to design and build a hydrogen fuel cell powered motorcycle to test the efficiencies of hydrogen fuel cell, internal combustion, and battery propulsion."
