Instead of just burning rubber this year, the Indy 500 is putting their torn up tires to good use and instigating their greenest-ever recycling program. We figured we'd get in the spirit and help put you on the fast track towards recycling your tires. There are plenty of ways you can do this, from dropping them off at a center to transforming them into classic kid-friendly swings to getting creative with your torn up treads.
If you just want to get rid them, check out the EPA's Scrap Tire Management program to find a recycling program near you. They'll make sure the tires are reused properly as fuel, exported, or recycled - they might even end up as gravel or bark substitute in a playground.
Pawning them off on the authorities is fine - and perfectly green - but why not have a little fun with your surplus rubber stash? If you there’s a sturdy tree nearby and you have kids, or anyone around for that matter, it may just be tire swing time. (After all, who doesn't love a tire swing?)
Or, you can always get creative with your wrangled rubber - tire shoes, anyone? Old tires can also make fine boat bumpers on a dock, or kitschy garden planters for a quirky backyard arrangement. And if you happen to have a PhD in Chemistry, apparently you can even turn your old tires into a water filter.
