NASCAR's four-time champ Jeff Gordon is zipping into Greensburg for the groundbreaking for eight homes, including two for Habitat for Humanity. His sponsor, Dupont, is kicking in a $750,000 pile of building materials for the project, part of the green rebuild of the town devastated by a tornado last year.
The reconstruction is being documented in a 13 part series on Planet Green, starting June 15.
Linda Stewart of Habitat for Humanity is thrilled: "DuPont's generous contributions are making it possible for the Habitat organization to offer affordable homeownership as a hands-up solution in the Greensburg community. We are tremendously grateful to DuPont and their business partners for their leadership and support."
Dupont VP Tom Schuler says "We cannot possibly imagine what this community has suffered, but we can help." And they did, donating products including Tyvek, which reduces air leakage, carpets made from "renewably sourced polymer," and efficient air conditioning systems with ozone-friendly refrigerants.
They are even donating jazzy green Corian countertops, proving that you don't have to give anything up to live sustainably.
