No one thought that they could do it. But in Season 1 of Greensburg, they proved everyone wrong. Not only has Greensburg rebuilt after a tornado leveled this tiny Kansas community, it's managed "to put the green back in Greensburg."
On May 4, 2007, a tornado estimated to be 1.7 miles wide with 205 mph winds struck the City of Greensburg and Kiowa County in Kansas. Monday, May 4, marks the 2-year anniversary of the tornado. Damage to Greensburg was significant, with more than 90 percent of the structures in the community severely damaged or destroyed. In this time of unthinkable disaster the fierce community fought back by establishing a long term community recovery plan that did more in 12 months than most towns can accomplish in 20 years.
In Season 2 of Greensburg, which premiers May 3 at 9:00 pm, watch as this once sleepy Midwestern community strives to be the greenest town in America. See the progressive construction which will one day result in a full Greensburg restoration where about 70 percent of the houses and 90 percent of the businesses will be green. Watch as green history is made before your very eyes with the new community arts center's construction, made of recycled wood and glass. See sustainable construction of the new state-of-the-art school which will be ecologically sound with natural lighting, a cistern to collect rainwater, and a geothermal heat pump.
