Money might not grow on trees but it can come from unexpected places. You may have been shocked by the manure mansion on the G Word, but in today's economy, there's a new black gold. Dairy farmers are taking one of the environment's biggest and smelliest pollutants - cow poop - and they're turning it into sustainable, eco-friendly energy.
Though the popularity of a mainstream, eco-friendly entertainment show like the G Word wouldn't have been possible fifty years ago, the practice of being environmentally friendly started long before going green became popular en masse. In fact, enlightened people were shrinking their ecological footprints long before any of us were even born!
In the 1960s, a group of laid-back young people called beatniks and hipsters migrated to San Francisco, creating their own community of individuals who disliked weapons, war, violence, and the generally conservative values of the era. Many hippies believed that enjoyment of and respect for nature was very important, consciously living natural lifestyles, eating healthy foods, and creating music that reflected these interests.
