This week on Focus Earth, Bob Woodruff and his team head to New Orleans for the third anniversary of Katrina, to check out green rebuilding in the 9th Ward, talk to Louisana's governor about the state's ecological future, and chart the path of Hurricane Gustav, which may threaten the city again. Plus, they'll explore the eco-credentials of new Obama running mate Joe Biden, see how Democrats are greening the Denver convention, and visit the world of tennis to talk about this year's eco-smarter US Open.
In a special report on New Orleans three years after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area, Bob visits the city's 9th Ward to bring you the latest on what's being done, and what still needs to happen. In the wake of the disaster, people are finding an opportunity to build green in the Big Easy, and working for a future where they can have better homes, and better lives, by taking on environmentally-conscious urban innovations.
After touring the city streets, Bob sits down with Louisana Governor Bobby Jindal, to talk about the state's ecological future. They'll discuss how vulnerable NOLA residents are to future hurricanes, how much progress has been made on the levees, and what impact the area's vanishing wetlands have on the problem. As scientists predict that an area the size of Rhode Island will wash away from the state's coastline by 2050, Southeast Louisiana has become the fastest disappearing land mass on Earth. Now, the government and residents face the problem of how to protect the region.
Meanwhile, as Hurricane Gustav barrels through Haiti and Cuba, leaving several dead in its path, we'll look at NASA images of the storm in action, and talk about how and where Gustav will hit the Gulf Coast.
Moving from way down South up to Denver, Colorado, you'll get the latest green news from the Democratic convention. We'll give you the rundown on where Senator Joseph Biden, Obama's Vice Presidential pick, stands on key green issues, and see the steps the Democrats are taking to shrink their party's carbon footprint after pledging to host the most environmentally sustainable political convention in modern American history.
From green politics to the Tennis green, we'll check out the eco-plans at the U.S. Open, where used balls will be bouncing back through a recycling program that's just one facet of a new, environmentally friendlier scheme for one of the sport's biggest events.
