This week, Focus Earth begins in London, where the World Wildlife Fund has issued a dire report on the state of the world's coral reefs. Then, the team has news from China, where communities in Sichuan are still struggling to rebuild one-year after the devastating earthquake. After, reports from the arctic, where melting tundra is accelerating climate change, and an interview with Philip Radford, the director of Greenpeace. Finally, Bob Woodruff goes out for an eco-friendly night on the town in New York City.
First, Mike Lee reports from London where the Word Wildlife Fund has issued a new report on the state of the world's coral reefs. The news is not good. Due to pollution and global warming, the world's coral reefs are in trouble. Besides the biodiversity that would be lost with them, the WWF estimates that half a billion livelihoods are at stake.
Then, Terry McCarthy visits communities in China that are still struggling to rebuild after last year's earthquake. The quake rocked Sichuan province, leaving more than 80,000 people dead and thousands more homeless and displaced. Focus Earth has the latest information on the rebuilding process.
Melting ice sheets in Antarctica and the Arctic get a lot of attention, but a more subtle form of melting could have even more serious consequences for the globe. Bill Blakemore reports from the Arctic, where melting tundra is releasing greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere at an astonishing rate. If the thaw in this region is not slowed quickly, it could dangerously compound warming from other sources.
Bob Woodruff sits down with the director of one group that is working to combat climate change. Philip Radford explains how Greenpeace is working to fight global warming by connecting with citizens on Main Street.
Finally, Bob Woodruff heads out from a night on the town. However, this is not your average evening of restaurants and clubs in New York City. Instead, it is a showcase of the latest in green nightlife, something that has become red hot in the Big Apple.
