First, Yunji DeNies reports from Washington where new standards for fuel efficiency were announced this week. President Barack Obama announced that fuel economy for passenger vehicles must meet a 39 mpg or more standard by 2016. This mandated increase in the Corporate Average Fleet Standard, or CAFE, is expected to challenge automakers, many of whom are struggling to meet the current standard of 27.5 mpg. Focus Earth provides an analysis of what this means for the future of cars in America.
Then, Bill Weir hops on the bus in Riverside, California. His trip, however, is not your average cross-town slog on a smog-belching bus. Instead, he rides one of Riverside's six new hybrid buses, which the town purchased with stimulus money. This week, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) issued its annual forecast for hurricane season. Cool ocean currents El Nino conditions, the agency predicts, will lead to a "near-normal" season with an estimate nine to 14 storms developing that will be named.
