This week, Focus Earth takes a look at a battle raging in Washington over a new climate change bill. Then, reports from the Midwest on the future of the Ford Motor Company, a fledgling biofuel industry, and Wisconsin's plan to become a leader in energy innovation. Finally, Focus Earth has the background on Prince Charles' new viral campaign to raise environmental awareness and save the rainforest.
First, Clayton Sandell reports from Washington, DC, where a bill aimed at tackling climate change has stalled. Proposed by Democrats Henry Waxman and Ed Markey, the bill would cap greenhouse-gas emissions through a permit system. The controversial cap and trade plan failed, at least initially, to attract support in Congress and was in danger of being postponed. After urging from the president, it now looks like the bill will move forward, but what concessions had to be made? Focus Earth has the full story.
Meanwhile, in Wayne, Michigan, the Ford Motor Company unveiled plans to revamp what was an SUV manufacturing plant. When the $500 million renovation is complete, the plant will begin manufacturing the new Focus Compact. The project is expected to generate 3,000 jobs in the area and comply with new legislation aimed at replacing SUVs with more fuel-efficient alternatives.
Prince Charles was busy this week launching a new viral campaign aimed at saving the rainforest. Recruiting names such as Daniel Craig and Kermit the Frog and using social-networking platforms like YouTube, the project hopes to bring NGOs and government agencies together to encourage and effect rainforest conservation.
Then, Bob Woodruff reports from Wisconsin, where dairy farmers have found an innovative source of energy ubiquitous on their property. Across the state famous for its cheese, a biofuel revolution, led by cow-poop power generators, is taking place. After visiting some of these farms, Bob Woodruff sits down with Wisconsin governor, Jim Doyle, to discuss how his state is becoming a national leader in alternative fuels.
Finally, Eric Horng visits the Cleveland Indians to see how the team has transformed their home field into a model eco-friendly stadium.
