This week, Bob Woodruff and the Focus Earth team have the latest analysis on the final presidential debate, information on the grey wolf's return to the endangered species list, and footage from the most recent wave of wildfires in California. Then it's off to the Amazon with reports of an endangered people before returning to the forests of Washington and exploring dramatic visions of the future.
With the election fast approaching, the presidential candidates hold their final debate. Even in the grips of economic turmoil, issues of energy and the environment remain important. Michael Levi, an expert on energy and climate change from the Council on Foreign Relations discusses the candidate's plans, separating the fact from fiction.
Meanwhile, new wildfires have burned through thousands of acres and left two people dead. Lisa Fletcher reports from California where winds are finally dying down and flames are receding. In similar news, recent efforts by the US Fish and Wildlife department to allow hunting of grey wolves have failed. The motion was defeated in court resulting in the wolves' return to the endangered species list.
Then, Dan Harris reports from the Amazon, where more than 200 Indian tribes have been forced out of their homes in the Brazilian rainforest. He visits the last members of the Akuntsus tribe who have been surrounded, and sometimes massacred, by encroaching loggers and farmers. The tribes represent the human price of the world's growing need for food and timber.
Clearly, the toll of the human population on the Earth is staggering, but what if we weren't here? If everyone where to disappear tomorrow, what would happen to our cities, factories, roads, and cars? Bob Woodruff sits down with Alan Weisman whose new book The World Without Us, explores this very question.
Finally, Neil Karlinsky visits a sanctuary deep in the forests of Washington State where one man has used his own retirement fund to establish a rehabilitation center for aged laboratory chimpanzees.
