Focus Earth: October 11, 2008

Fri Oct 10 14:15:00 EDT 2008

This week, the Focus Earth team investigates the hazards of green tourism, rounds up the green highlights of the presidential debates, and brings you the latest eco-news from the White House to the Galapagos Islands, plus everything in between.

The Focus Earth team brings you a special "Vote 2008" report on presidential hopefuls Barack Obama and John McCain. First, a rundown of key moments from the candidates' debate in Tennessee this week. Then, Rick Klein of ABC news spells out the facts and fiction of the contenders' records on energy and the environment.

Then, the eco-news team has the latest facts on exciting new green policy being made in Washington, D.C., where the U.S. Department of the Interior is setting stronger ground rules to protect the disappearing Artic habitat of polar bears. Focus Earth has the story on this new move that aims to save these areas that are at risk of disappearing due to climate change. Plus, ABC News Chief Justice Correspondent Jan Crawford-Greenburg has the latest from the Supreme Court, where justices are giving their arguments in a landmark environmental case about the U.S. Navy’s use of sonar, and the deadly results for threatened whales. As the highest court in the land struggles to strike a balance between national security and protecting the environment, tune in to Focus Earth to find out what you need to know.

Across the world, off the coasts of Brazil, discover how scientists are guiding lost penguins, who have become disoriented by warming ocean currents, back to their native sea waters. Meanwhile, off the coast of Mexico, Hurricane Norbert reaches Category 3 status, and threatens to touch down on land by the weekend.

Then, venture to the Galapagos Islands, where reporter Jeffrey Kofman has some surprising facts about the eco-tourism trend. As tourists come from all over the world to grab a peek at the famed Galapagos wildlife that famously inspired the work of Charles Darwin, we'll find out what mark their vacations are leaving on the globe's most guarded eco-system. For an in-depth look at the dangers of eco-tourism, Focus Earth brings you an interview with green travel expert Costas Christ, Global Travel Editor and columnist for National Geographic Adventure magazine. Costas has spent decades bringing awareness to travelers so that they can make lasting memories on vacation without leaving a permanent ecological footprint, and he’ll share his perspective and experience on Focus Earth this week.

Finally, it's back to the United States, where Lisa Stark heads to the heart of Milwaukee, Wisconsin to discover the former professional basketball player who is transforming both his city, and people's dinner plates, by creating an exciting new urban farm. Tune in to find out how fresh produce can thrive in the concrete jungle.
