The G8 (or Group of eight) is a more than 30-year-old group of eight nations (if you didn't already know) that gets together once a year, in one of the countries (they alternate) and talks about stuff: global economics, peace, democracy, trade, and, oh yeah, the environment. This year they met in Japan and all leaders have agreed to cut emissions. So what's that mean?
The headline is the world's richest nations are cutting greenhouse gases by half by 2050. What the G8 did not do is set shorter term goals or get real specific about how this is all going to happen. There was lots of talk about how other nations need to get involved, namely China.
The net effect of the G8 consensus has yet to be decided?indeed it may take 42 years to know if it's even met its goal?but whether you think the 50 by 50 target is too ambitious, not ambitious enough, right on point, or needs further explanation, it is nice that President Bush says, Sure, let's cut those emissions in half.
How do you think the G8 should handle greenhouse emissions standards?
