READ MORE ABOUT:
Inspired by her father Paul Newman, and the success of his all-natural food company Newman’s Own, Nell Newman founded Newman’s Own Organics in 1993, and quickly rose to become a pioneer of the organic food revolution. Newman fought the traditional perception that organic produce had to be heavy and whole wheat in order to be healthy. “It surely couldn’t taste like a dog bone,” she remembers her father saying.
Newman conceives organic agriculture as a holistic system aimed at maintaining ecological harmony and optimizing our personal health. Newman is concerned by the fact that society has become accustomed to a very cheap food source, and she is determined to change this. Her mission: to give people the choice to make a conscious decision in what they eat and how they care for their environment by offering healthy and affordable alternatives.
More About Nell
Nell Newman launched Newman's Own Organics: The Second Generation with business partner Peter Meehan in 1993 as a division of Newman’s Own. The daughter of actors Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Nell had an early introduction to natural foods at their rural Connecticut home. The family had a garden, raised chickens, and Nell was taught to cook by her mother, and spent many hours fishing with her father. While in college, she continued to experiment in the kitchen, and is still the designated chef when home for family holiday dinners.
Nell's commitment to organic foods and sustainable agriculture led her to convince her father to establish an organic division of Newman's Own. She won him over by creating a completely organic Thanksgiving dinner, and then suggesting organic food products for the new Newman's Own Organics’ line. In 2000 the division became an independent company with the motto: Great tasting products that happen to be organic. Nell’s ideas on how we all can make a difference are highlighted in her book ‘The Newman’s Own Organics Guide to a Good Life: Simple Measures That Benefit You and the Place You Live.’ The book is filled with realistic, practical advice on why living a more environmentally conscious life helps us all.
