When asked what he would do to help reduce carbon emissions, the actor Matthew Modine had an immediate answer: Bicycle. Driven by the idea that a simple act could have a substantial impact on the planet, Modine created the environmental initiative Bicycle for a Day. The goal of Bicycle for a Day is to create a singular event whereby people throughout the world will get on their bicycles and ride. By promoting the use of bicycles as a transportation alternative, Modine hopes to lessen our collective carbon footprint and increase personal fitness.
In order to generate a global movement, Modine has created the Bicycle Container Project, which will provide bicycles to people in developing countries.
Modine’s vision is inspired by an extremely personal yet universal experience - the sense of liberation that young people enjoy the first time they get on a bicycle and ride.
