“To the library!”

The holidays have passed. With the economy the way it is, making any travel plans may be difficult. You might be stuck in your town, waiting for the crisp, alabaster days of winter to pass. You’ve beaten all your games involving that fast-moving hedgehog and your TV shows are all watched up. There’s no more money to spend, and you’re looking for something do. May I recommend the library?  Sure, I sound like an after-school PSA—Reading is an adventure that you can always partake in!! Notice the double exclamation point? That’s hardcore PSA-speak right there. No one but a PSA writer or a 14-year-old girl would even attempt such a thing. — Anyways.

Libraries are a green way to take a hometown staycation. Almost every village and hamlet has a library and going to the library is free. The librarians are ever so nice and library visitation is a pretty green activity.

Renting books,  for free nonetheless, is much better for the environment than buying new books. When you are done with the book, you can just return and put it back in circulation. You can also check it out whenever you want, and if you move, the book will probably be at the library in your new town. That’ll cut down on the hassle of packing for you and carbon emissions for the rest of us.

Not traveling to faraway locales is also great for the old environment. Don’t get all like, “yeah right” to me. Libraries are a great way to meet people and exchange ideas. You could talk about books or green issues and find others with similar ideas. Libraries are a community and literary hub. You can find out what authors are coming to read at nearby universities and if there is any local music to be heard.

You’re not too cool for the library. Check it out. It’s a vacation in your own town!!!
