Winter hiking and snowshoeing are low-impact, eco-friendly sports. Unlike downhill skiing or snowboarding, these activities require no slopes, little travel and can be done locally. They are ideal sports for someone who wants to decrease their carbon footprint while increasing their actual footprint in the snow. These activities have some risks associated with them. We want everyone to be safe while they engage in green winter sports. So here are some safety tips.

  1. Avoid Long Hikes Alone
If you’re planning an all-day trek, it might be a good idea to bring a friend. That way if you get injured or sick, your friend can help you get back to civilization. If you do hike alone, tell at least one person where you are going. Show your friend your itinerary. If you get injured or lost, your friend can notify the authorities, and you will be saved. You should also bring your cell phone. It may not work, so you can't rely on it.

  2. Check Avalanche Conditions
If you are hiking in or around the mountains, you’re in “avalanche country.” Give a call to your local avalanche hotline before journeying.

  3. Dress in Layers
Dressing in layers can keep your warmer, but it also provides you with the option to remove clothing to reduce sweating.

  4. Take the 10 Essentials
According to Seattle Pi, these are the ten essentials: Topographic map, compass, extra food, extra clothing, firestarter, matches, sun protection, a pocket knife, first-aid kit, and flashlight.

  5. To Build a Fire
Remember that Jack London story where the guy tries to build a fire and fails? Don’t be that guy. Learn to build an emergency shelter. You can’t rely on your ability to start a fire.
