Wild Horse Roundups in Nevada: Cruel or Necessary?

With all the big news this summer, from the BP spill to the primaries, no one can be blamed for missing the news that wild horses are being rounded up in Nevada. But they are, and it's a controversy.

Land managers say the horses could die from dehydration if they aren't rounded up; animal activists say they already have died because of the roundups—13 mustangs so far—and are calling for it to stop.

In her lawsuit seeking a temporary restraining order halting the roundup, horse advocate and author Laura Leigh of Minden argues the BLM violated its own policy not to conduct helicopter roundups until at least six weeks after peak foaling season ends...


The BLM suspended the roundup last weekend when seven horses died of dehydration and water intoxication after being herded by helicopter on the first day of the roundup. Five other horses have since died of similar causes. Another horse broke a leg and was put down.
