You might be tempted to bring bottled water on your next camping trip or backpacking adventure. It makes sense. Drinking water from a mountain stream can be potentially hazardous to your health. Bottled water isn't very good for the environment. What can you do?
You can treat that water. Treating water is much better for the environment than bottled water, because bottled water creates so much waste. Apart from the obvious trash that is generated by the bottle and all its trappings, carbon emissions are also generated by transporting and cooling the water.
One of the most common ways to treat water on the go is with water purification tablets. When used correctly, these tables will remove all the microorganisms from the water and make it safe for human consumption. A potential upside to carrying water purification tablets is that they are much lighter than bottled water. If you plan on taking a three-day hike, you're going to have to carry scads of water. The tablets weigh less than bottled water and you can fill your canteens as needed. The water purification tablets also quite cheap, about five bucks for a box of fifty.
Water purification tablets will not remove toxins from water. So if you are vacationing in an ancient foreign city and you treat the water from the tap with these tablets, they will not remove lead, mercury or other toxic pollutants from the water. Check with your country's consulate before trying to treat local tap water.
