If you go to a concert, it helps to come home with a T-shirt. That way, you can boast that you saw your favorite band live, and show off a shirt that you can't buy at the store.

Joan Hammel, a singer-songwriter from the Chicago area, has a different idea. She recycles T-shirts, buying used ones from local vintage stores, and putting her name on the duds.

Her fans get to show off their tees, and fewer tees have to be made.

She says she learned it from a friend who's part of a band called Butterfly Sky.

Hammel customizes the repurposed shirts by ironing on decals printed from her computer, or having the shirts silk-screened with an image.

Hammel has been nominated for Pop Entertainer of the Year by the Chicago Music Awards.

Other nominees have included R. Kelly, Kanye West, Wilco and Jennifer Hudson.

Hammel sells the shirts at her gigs.
