People tend to make lists of places they want to go before they die. But what about places you want to go before the places die? It's hard to imagine the world radically altering within our lifetime—but whether we imagine it or not, it could happen (according to Independent Traveler).
Scary but true: Alaska is warming at a rapid pace, and its glaciers and tundra's are in jeopardy. Venice is flooding. Glacier National Park is losing its namesake—the glaciers may be gone within 30 years. The Alps are melting as well, and the Austrians are freaking out—so much so that they want to wrap their mountains in blankets. Coral and fish in the Great Barrier Reef (and many other coral reefs around the globe) are threatened by bacteria that results from rising water temperature.
So go see some of the world's best travel spots while you can?but do it responsibly. Sure, the carbon emissions necessary to jet from here to there are bad. But tourism dollars can be an integral part of a destination?s ability to protect itself, and if people are flocking to an area, it?s more likely to be on the radar of conservationists and the local government.
Here are a few easy ways to make your travel green:
- Bring a reusable water bottle to minimize waste.
- Use public transportation
- Stay at green hotels
