Most of us are really happy that the airplane was invented and that it can whiz us around the globe in a matter of no time. Air travel has really made globetrotting temporally feasible. However, airplane flight hasn't been that great for the environment. We all like the environment, but sometimes you just have to fly. What to do?
One popular method employed by green frequent flyers is to purchase carbon offsets. How do carbon offsets work? Simply put, when you or your business produce carbon through travel or manufacturing, you can send money to fund a project that reduces greenhouse gases.
But who do you send your money to? Carbon offset companies are popping up like wildflowers. How can you be sure your carbon is really being offset? That's where Tufts University has stepped in. They’ released a 53-page report (.PDF) on which carbon offsetters are the best. (Page 38 of the report has all the rankings.)
Here are the companies that Tufts University recommends:
- Atmosfair
Atmosfair received a ranking of Excellent from Tufts. They will reduce one ton of CO2 for $17.30. If you are having trouble finding the English version of their website, click on the Union Jack. I know, it took me a little while to find it, too. - Climate Friendly
Climate Friendly also received the ranking of Excellent from Tufts. They will offset one ton of carbon for $14.50. - Native Energy
Native Energy received the ranking of Very Good. They will offset a ton of carbon for only 12 smackers. They are the least expensive of the best. Great place to offset during a recession. - Carbon Counter
Carbon Counter was awarded the ranking of Very Good. At the time of the study their carbon calculators underestimated the emissions of air travel. Since the study, they have overhauled their website. They will offset a ton of carbon for 13 clams.
- Honorable Mention: My Climate, but only if you're Swiss.
My Climate’s Swiss site received a ranking of Very Good. The English site was ranked as Acceptable, because the calculator on the English site underestimated emissions. If you go through these guys, bring a Swiss translator. They will offset a ton of carbon for 27 franks or 18 bucks on the US site.
