Tobogganing is fun for the whole family. It's a fairly low-impact outdoor recreational activity that can be done during the winter and in the snow. Toboggans, unlike sleds, are usually made out of wood and are meant to last. Hurling yourself down a mountain or hill at breakneck speeds into a grove of trees can severely reduce the lifespan of your sled and yourself. If you can manage to avoid that particular pitfall, here are some tips on how to maintain your toboggan.
- Store the toboggan in a dry, cool area. Keep it off of concrete. If you hang it on a wall make sure that it is properly supported.
- Clean it off after use.
- Cascade Toboggan has some in-depth information on maintaining the various bits of the toboggan.
- Check the toboggan for signs of wear and tear. If the wood looks cracked, take it to sporting goods store. See if it the crack is fixable. You might be able to replace that one slat. It's better than throwing out the whole sled.
- Replace broken straps and old latch pins.
- Wear a helmet if the slope is too steep. You should protect your head as well.
- Wax your toboggan before use. It will make your ride faster and cut down on wear and tear. Use all-natural products like Beeswax or Olive Oil.
