Taking the downhill plunge can take a toll on your skis. In order to ensure their longevity, one must learn how to properly care for skis. Keeping your skis in the best possible condition can reduce your need to buy new skis and reduce the amount of skis that need to be manufactured. The fewer skis manufactured, the less minerals and resources will be consumed. You will also save money.

Wax Your Skis
Waxing will keep your skis in good condition. It is a complicated procedure, however. This article on Spadout will help you wax your skis. It has pictures and even helps you figure out what type of wax to use. Skis should be waxed every 5 or so ski days.

Sharpen Your Skis
This is something that is best left to the professionals. Your nearest ski shop or ski resort should have all the necessary equipment to sharpen the skis for you. However, you can sharpen them yourself. Sharpen every 5-10 ski days.

Clean and Store
Like everything else, skis will last longer if they are cleaned after use and properly stored. Clean off any moisture and wax the skis before you store them. Skis will last longer if stored at room temperature. Keep them off concrete.

Relax the Binding
Before storing your skis for the summer, loosen the release mechanism to conserve spring tension. Have someone at the ski shop reset it for you next year.
