As the days get longer and the flowers grow taller, it's the perfect time to leave the car in the driveway and take a walk! Forty percent of all our car trips in the U.S. are less than two miles. Less than two miles! So get out there in the lovely weather and burn some calories while you're saving the planet and keeping the cash in your wallet.
Or ride your bike. Bike lanes are getting upgrades and additions in many cities around the country—even in New York, where not too long ago, biking was a full contact sport. Outfit your bicycle with a basket or two, and ride it to do errands instead of burning fossil fuel and wasting money on gas. There are loads of sleek commuter bikes out there, like the Electra Amsterdam, which comes with chain guards, a pedal-powered light, and a rack for tying down your bag.
And when you simply can't walk or bike, take advantage of public transportation. With gas prices continuing to rise, pretty soon you'll have saved enough by leaving the car at home to buy yourself a perfectly good bicycle. See how easy it is?
