If you love the outdoors, you might find yourself traipsing through thickets, brambles, copses and forests. You'll see unusual foliage, majestic wildlife and little-explored mountain hollers. And as long as you traipse responsibly, it is all well and good to see those things. But what happens when you see something that you don't want to? Like a pile of rubbish in a peaceful glen? Or a thick, grey sludge in a babbling brook? You can't just let a travesty like that go unnoticed. You have to report that illegal dumping.

  1. Take Notes
Make a note of everything you see. List the items that were dumped. If you see the dumpers in action, take down the license plate numbers and/or physical descriptions. Please note the time as well.

If you are in the wild, sketch a map to the source of the dumping. You can also use your phone's GPS to keep track of the garbage's whereabouts.

  2. Who You Gonna Call?
Something strange in the neighborhood? You'll need to contact local authorities. Some areas have statewide illegal-dumping programs. If you don't have a phonebook or the internet on hand, simply call the police, and they will notify the proper authorities.

  3. Anonymous or Not
You have to ability to report illegal dumping anonymously, but you may be of more help if you fill out a public statement and assist officials in their investigation. The choice, however, is yours.
