Earth Day is a big deal in New York City and unlike other events (like fashion week, for instance) that revolve around Manhattan, excluding the outer boroughs, Earth Day belongs to The Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island and even Queens. While I'll be in San Francisco this year on Earth Day, I'm making plans to celebrate Earth Day in New York at the Queens is Green fashion show on April 18th.

The 2nd annual "Queens is Green" fashion show is being held Saturday, April 18th from 6-8pm at Green Space (37-24 24th St. #301) in Long Island City/Astoria. The fashion show is free with a simple rsvp. Just email Lynne Serpe at queensisgreen@gmail.com and reserve your space for this bound-to-be-awesome show.

The fashion show will include clothing made from sustainable fabrics, yes, but it will also include items that are handmade and refashioned from recycled and/or reusable products. That's what I'm talking about! All too often I hear the term 'green fashion' only associated with 'sustainable fabrics'. I'm excited to see a show that's expanding on the concept of green fashion—runway style and within walking distance for me.

Lynne Serpe and Robyn Sklar Nelson both run Triple R Events They organize monthly (free!) events in Long Island City and Astoria. Somehow or another, I've lived in Astoria for nearly seven years and never knew about them until now. Well, rest assured, I'll be attending their events from now on, starting with this Earth Day fashion show.
