You commute to work with pedal power, streamers flapping in the wind, baseball cards thwacking in your wheels, basket wobbling as you ride over a pothole. OK. So you're probably older and cooler than that. You're probably a stylish urban professional who cares enough about the environment to bike to work, instead of expending non-renewable fuel and putting carbon emissions into our air.
Your eco-friendly lifestyle doesn't stop at your commute. You probably do as much as you can for the planet. An easy way to help the planet and save some money is by taking proper care of your bicycle.
How to Take Care of Your Bicycle
Tires
Keep the tires properly inflated. Check your tires before you get on a bike. Properly inflated tires are your greatest safeguard against flat tires. Carry a patch kit when biking.
Brakes
Check your brakes often. Are the break pads worn down? Keep the brake pads free of dirt and debris. Brakes should work immediately with no slipping. If this is not the case, have them adjusted.
Chain
Acquire a chain guard for your bike. Keep your chain clean. Oil it often. Check your chain for damage. A loose chain is trouble.
Wheels
Replace broken spokes. Keep the wheel nuts tight. Lubricate wheel nuts at least once a year.
Frame
Sand away rust, touch up with paint afterward. Keep your bike clean. Use a damp cloth, no soap. Store it in a cool, dry place. Check all bolts for tightness before embarking on long journeys.
