While Greensburg is looking to be the first platinum certified LEED city in the country (in other words, the most eco-friendly town in America) it's not the only town with such aspirations.
Other cities across America have blazed an eco-friendly trail before it, and many have a similar aim of sustainability.
Serenbe, Georgia, is dedicated to green living. It's a community of 900 environmentally minded citizens, and according to the town's website it follows very specific standards. These standards include energy efficiency, low maintenance, air quality, water conservation, and resource-efficient building materials and systems.
It's also home to a 25 acre working organic farm, a two-stage chemical-free waste water treatment process, and buildings that aesthetically mimic their natural surroundings.
The Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage in Missouri has similar ambitions, though the town is still under development. Its goal is “to grow to be a small, locally self-reliant town of 500 to 1000 residents, committed to radical environmental sustainability.”
And though sustainable communities are a relatively new concept, there are some ideas in place about how they typically work. A cooperative, communal spirit is of utmost importance, as is a desire to live as greenly as possible. Looks like Greensburg will be in good company.
