Monarch Butterflies are one of the most distinct and remarkable butterfly populations in the U.S. Lately there?s been some concern about their waning numbers, but the inspiring insects are nonetheless flying on.

Every year, Monarch butterflies make their international migration?towards and into Mexico in the fall, and back up to the northern parts of the Midwest in spring. They began their trek south in late summer. Track their progress this year with this animated map to keep tabs on their whereabouts this fall.

As reported in Mother Earth News, the Monarchs are already on the move, and if you live in the Midwest, you should already be witnessing the exodus towards Mexico firsthand. To check out the trajectory of the butterflies, and to see when you can be expecting them to make an appearance in your state, check out the Journey North for a plethora of info on the peripatetic insects.
