If you're an outdoorsman, then you probably have a knife that you take to the outdoors with you. Unlike knives in movies, this outdoors knife is not for stabbing. Heavens no. This knife is a proper tool and should be treated as such.
Knives can be used to solve a variety of problems. It can make one sandwich two sandwiches. It can make a fish ready to be a sandwich and it can cut bread into sandwich slices.
Making your things last is a very green thing indeed. It saves on materials and keeps things out of the landfill. Keeping something in proper working order is better for the planet than recycling it.
But how do you take care of your knife when you're not making sandwiches in the wild?
10 Tips for Easy Knife Maintenance:
- Do not store your knife in a the sheath for long periods of time. Some sheaths, particularly leather, will soak up moisture. For long-term storage, put the knife in a soft cloth in a place that isn't humid.
- Clean the knife with vegetable oil to keep it from rusting.
- Remove those unsightly scuffs with beeswax.
- Keep your knife properly sharpened.
- If your sheath gets wet, dry it out before storing the knife in it.
- If you use a flip-open knife, gently close the blade to avoid dulling the knife.
- If rust appears on your knife, scrub the rust with rubbing alcohol and steel wool.
- Make sure to clean the handle as often as you clean the blade. Use a material-specific eco-friendly cleaner.
- Don't wash outdoor knives in the dishwasher or soak them in water over night.
- Don't store knife in mouth.
