READ MORE ABOUT:
Founded in 1892 by John Muir—one of the earliest green activists—the Sierra Club is one of nation's oldest, largest, and most influential environmental organizations. And if you join it, you get a free rucksack.
Seriously—it already costs next to nothing to join (25 bucks is the minimum membership donation) and you get a subscription to Sierra Club magazine, Sierra, too. And that money is put to good use in one of the greenest organizations to grace the U.S.
Long noted for their efforts to protect wildlife reserves and endangered species, the Club has widened its efforts to include combating global warming and lobbying for clean energy and more efficient transportation. You don't have to be a member to help them on these fronts—you can visit their take action site to help petition to prevent the overturning of endangered species regulations.
But it's not all grassroots at the Sierra Club, either. They also organize great wilderness trips and offer helpful camping and backpacking tips as well. I think what I'm trying to say is, membership to this iconic club will get you far more than a rucksack.
