Make Your Own Wind Chimes

Wind Chimes are wonderful, but why buy them when you can make them yourself?

I found myself in Woodstock, New York, a few weeks ago, marveled by the beautiful wind chimes aligned against the wall of a charming downtown store. I was mesmerized by the tones the chimes made. I was impressed with their beauty. In fact, I was impressed with just about every aspect of these chimes other than their price tag.

The $300 price tag on the chimes I most adored got me thinking...why not make some chimes myself? Not only would I be saving myself money in doing so, but I would also be reusing otherwise wasted items if I made the chimes creatively.

After coming home from my trip and doing some research, I realized that chime-making is much easier than I once suspected. Chimes for your yard or garden can be made from items you might not have otherwise granted a second thought.

How to make your own wind chimes:

  1. Use a drill to make a hole in the base of metal or wooden items like bowls or wooden bowls, cans, or cups.

  2. Use a string or wire to pull through the hole.

  3. By attaching a heavy piece of metal to the end of the string inside the cup, bowl, or can, you've made a bell that can be fastened onto other bells or left by itself.

In order to make a traditional chime, all that you need to do is find something flat as a holding surface. A flat piece of scrap wood or metal works perfectly for this.

  1. Drill as many holes as you'd like through the flat object.

  2. Run a string or wire through the assortment of holes you've got.

  3. Attach heavy wooden or metal pieces at the ends of each piece of string.

That's it!

Making your own chime set is a great way to be creative, save money, and use up old things no longer serving a purpose around your home.
