The little things, the simple things...they make me happy. I know not everyone I meet is even remotely as easily amused as I am. I feel badly for those people. There is something to be said for innocently enjoying life and the wonderful things that are all around us every single day. Like wind. Wind is something we can't see, but we can feel it. We know it is there, particularly through inventions like the kite. When I was a little girl, I used to love flying kites. I'd make the simplest kites out of a plastic bag and string and I would be entertained all afternoon long. Now that I'm a bit more crafty and eco-minded, I still enjoy making my own kites, but with more detail. If you're looking to make a kite from some materials you probably have around the house, you should do it!
Here's how to make your own kite:
What you need:
1 two foot long stick or rod
1 three foot stick or rod
1 large sheet of newspaper or extra craft paper
String (lots of tied shoelaces works!)
Scissors
Glue
What you do:
Place your two sticks/rods together so that they cross. With string, tie the two together where they join. Wrap it around several times so it is secure. Cut a notch into the four ends of the sticks. Wrap a piece of string around the cross making sure to string around each of the four notches. This will be your kite's frame when you're done. Place your paper on a flat surface and cut around the shape of the kite. Leave two or three inches of extra space when you cut. Fold the excess paper over the frame and glue it down. Tie a long piece of string to the inner frame and make it as long as you wish.
Have fun with the little things!
