Watching Greensburg develop into such an eco-friendly locale may make you want to get out see what else is going on green out there. Well, you’re in luck: the relatively new industry of eco-tourism is booming, and there are tons of new destinations opening up all the time. Eco-tourism is the practice of vacationing with an environmentally friendly awareness and intent. These are some of the hottest, newest, and most exciting eco-attractions around:
Japan
Eco-tourism is nothing new in Japan—it began about 15 years ago. But with international attention turning to green-friendly activities, eco-tourism is really heating up. Some of the star attractions on the green roster are Japan's famous hot springs, a wealth of hiking and climbing options, and scuba diving and snorkeling. What's more, Japan has a fantastic public train system, so you can opt out of renting a gas guzzling car for your trip.
Lebanon
Environmentally friendly vacationing is even taking off in the Middle East. There's a slew of eco-friendly travel options in Lebanon, from hiking tours to bike treks to Eco Villages you can check into for some organic eats and a restorative sleep.
Ecuador
Okay, so eco-tourism may not be booming in Ecuador just yet—but thanks to the Yachana Foundation, which offer a degrees in Eco-tourism (among others) to local underprivileged youth, it will be soon. The program is linked to the Yachana Lodge, a luxury eco-travel resort in the heart of the Ecuadorian Amazon.
