Wed Sep 24, 2008 08:00 AM ET

g word hair mats video

Hair does a great job keeping our scalps protected from the sun but it can also be used to help clean up some of the worst environmental disasters. That's right, human hair has been found to be extremely effective in cleaning oil from the beach and water after an oil spill.

In this video, G Word correspondent David Newsom visits a group that is taking old hair clippings, the kind that most salons sweep into the garbage, and turning them into organic, reusable, hair mats capable of pulling oil out of water.

Learn the inspiring story behind this unique invention and what you can do to help in this exclusive online clip from G Word.

Find out more clever ways people are cleaning up oily messes in the G Word Episode: Getting Rid of Greasy Build-up.
