For yogis, a retreat is an opportunity to deepen your yoga practice. It can also be a time to spoil yourself and get back in touch with nature. But like everything else yoga has become an industry and today you have to be careful that you're supporting eco-friendly establishments with your money. The next time you plan a retreat, take the time to make sure that you're being a green yogi!
Make sure that the retreat is hosted by a green hotel.
Yoga retreats are about getting back to you, not fancy, luxurious hotels with wasteful spas and no connection with the outdoors. Once you discover small eco-lodges, you'll never be able to stay in a huge chain hotel again. That personal service and attention to detail just cannot be beat. Try small lodges like OjoDel Mar lodge in Costa Rica. The lodge hosts all sorts of yoga retreats throughout the year. If you can't come during a retreat, it also has yoga year round. The indoor/outdoor cabins allow you to get close with nature and at the solar powered Casa Grande, meals are prepared with fresh, local ingredients and vegetables from the organic garden and the farmers' market. You can also plan through a company called Tropical Escapes. The company plans just that, tropical escapes. It has tons of yoga retreats planned throughout the Caribbean in places like the Dominican Republic, St. Lucia, and Jamaica. The company partners with eco-lodges to host green retreats.
Offset your travel.
If you can't find a retreat close to home then offset your travel. I know quite a few people that deal with Native Energy. You can first calculate how much you need to offset and then pick a project.
Pack green.
There are tons of eco-friendly yoga products out there that you should be aware of and enjoy. Check out this guide to greening your yoga products.
